Satisfactory is a first-person open-world factory automation game by Coffee Stain Studios. You play a FICSIT engineer sent to a distant alien planet with one job: exploit the planet's resources and build increasingly complex automated production lines. After years in Early Access, Satisfactory 1.0 officially launched on September 10, 2024.
Unlike Factorio's top-down view, Satisfactory puts you in first person, letting you walk through your own factory and admire (or curse) the spaghetti belts you've built. This guide covers the essential knowledge every new engineer needs to go from hand-crafting to a fully automated megafactory.
1. Game at a Glance
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Developer | Coffee Stain Studios |
| Genre | First-person factory automation / open world |
| Core Loop | Mine resources → build production lines → unlock tiers → expand factory |
| Key Structure | HUB (Milestones) + Space Elevator (Phases) + MAM (research) |
2. The Three Progression Systems
Understanding Satisfactory's progression is the key to not getting overwhelmed. There are three parallel systems:
- HUB Milestones — your main tech tree, split into Tiers 0-8. Deliver resources to the HUB to unlock new buildings, belts, and power.
- Space Elevator Phases — the long-term goal line. Deliver large quantities of complex parts to advance "Project Assembly" phases, which gate the late-game tiers.
- MAM (Molecular Analysis Machine) — research system for exploring alien tech: alternate recipes, power shards, better gear, and map tools.
Pro tip: feed every new resource you discover into the MAM first. Many crucial upgrades (like power shards and better build tools) only come from MAM research.
3. Starting Locations (4 Choices)
When you create a new save, you pick one of four starting biomes. Each trades resource density for danger and terrain difficulty.
The classic recommended start. Flat, open terrain, abundant iron and limestone, few hostile creatures. The downside is you'll need to travel for coal and oil later, and pure nodes are limited.
Balanced start with more pure nodes and closer coal. Terrain is rougher and there are more aggressive creatures, but it pays off for mid-game expansion.
The richest start — nearly every resource is close, with many pure nodes. But the terrain is very vertical and there are more dangerous creatures. Best for experienced players.
The most dangerous start: extreme heat, scarce water, and tough creatures. Not recommended for beginners — the rewards don't justify the early-game pain.
4. Your First Factory (Step by Step)
Golden rule: your first factory does NOT need perfect ratios. It just needs to run continuously. Optimize later — automate first.
5. Power Management
Power is the #1 early-game killer. Understanding the three power stages prevents your whole factory from blacking out.
| Stage | Source | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early | Biomass Burners | Simple, unlimited placement | Manual refueling (leaves/wood) |
| Mid | Coal Generators | Fully automated (coal + water) | Needs water extractors |
| Late | Fuel / Nuclear | Massive output | Complex supply chain |
Coal power is the game-changer. The moment you can set up an automated coal + water line, you never have to hand-feed a burner again. Prioritize reaching coal power early.
6. Space Elevator & Project Assembly
The Space Elevator is your long-term objective. Each "Project Assembly" phase demands a large batch of increasingly complex parts, and completing them unlocks the next set of tiers. It's the difference between a local workshop and a planetary megafactory.
| Phase | Key Deliverables | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Smart Plating | Tier 3-4 |
| Phase 2 | Versatile Framework | Tier 5-6 |
| Phase 3 | Modular Engine + Adaptive Control Unit | Tier 7 |
| Phase 4 | Nuclear Pasta + Magnetic Field Generator | Tier 8 |
7. Pro Tips & Common Mistakes
- Use foundations everywhere — they snap to a grid, keep belts straight, and deconstruct for a full refund.
- Don't over-build early — a small clean factory beats a huge spaghetti mess you'll tear down later.
- Leave room to expand — always build with one empty side for future belt lines.
- Rush coal power — it's the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade in the game.
- Feed the MAM everything — power shards, alternate recipes, and better gear are hidden in research.
- Use the interactive maps — satisfactory-calculator.com and satisfactory.th.gl show every node and resource location.
- Play co-op — 2-4 players massively speed up building and resource hauling.
Ultimate loop: automate iron → reach coal power → complete Space Elevator Phase 1 → unlock better tiers → scale to a megafactory. The factory must grow.
