In a landmark moment for mathematics, Deng Yu and Wang Hong have become the first Chinese nationals to win the prestigious Fields Medal, often described as the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics." The announcement was made at the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia on July 23, 2026.
Deng Yu was recognized for his outstanding work in partial differential equations, while Wang Hong was honored for her contributions to harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory. They were joined by American mathematician John Pardon and Canadian mathematician Jacob Tsimerman as this year's four recipients.
The Fields Medal is awarded every four years to up to four mathematicians under the age of 40, recognizing exceptional contributions to the field. Previously, only Chinese-born mathematicians Shing-Tung Yau and Terence Tao had received the honor.

In a remarkable coincidence, both Deng Yu and Wang Hong entered Peking University in 2007. Wang Hong originally enrolled in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences before transferring to the School of Mathematical Sciences in her sophomore year. Deng Yu, who won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) during high school, was admitted directly to Peking University's School of Mathematical Sciences.

Fields Medalist Efim Zelmanov noted: "The most important educational stages of both winners were completed in China. Their outstanding achievements powerfully demonstrate that China's position in world mathematics is becoming increasingly important."
Peking University professor and director of the Beijing International Mathematics Research Center, Tian Gang, highlighted that the breakthrough reflects years of stable national investment in basic science. In recent years, China has established 13 national applied mathematics centers and launched the "14th Five-Year Plan" national key R&D program for mathematics and applied research.
